We perform many reviews for clients who have been unhappy with their prior tax preparer and, unfortunately, find lots of errors or missing items.  Some of the more common ones include for following:

-Self-employed health insurance deduction for taxpayers who have 1099 / self-employment income as an independent contractor or as a side gig.  With health insurance being so expensive nowadays this is not a deduction you want to skip over

-Not claiming education credits for tuition and other qualifying education expenses and/or deductions for student loan interest paid.  Education credits can be taken EVEN IF student loans are used to pay for the qualifying expenses

-Retirement saver’s credit IN ADDITION TO IRA deduction

-Misclassified income

-Missing deductions for self-employed taxpayers

-Missing expenses for investment rental properties – including one of the largest deductions you get, which is called Depreciation

There have been significant changes in the Individual Tax codes coming into 2023 in regards to energy credits such as energy efficient improvements to your home have been increased and expanded and electric vehicles (EVs).  Did you know, for example, that Tesla is once again eligible for a tax credit or that you can now get a credit for purchasing a used electric vehicle?!

We also assist with fiduciary returns for Trusts and Estates.  It’s never an enjoyable situation to be in when a family member passes away.  Adding the unknown, in regards to taxes, on top of that can be stressful.  We sit down and, through a thorough conversation about the assets of the deceased, provide a plan going forward for what needs to be filed … and what may not need to be filed.  We also assist in planning for distribution of inherited assets in the most tax-advantageous ways.

We can also help with responding to IRS letters. We understand that these can be scary to receive, but we can help even if our office did not assist in the preparation of your return.  We are familiar with the correct wording that needs to be included in your response to ensure proper handling and treatment by the IRS.  If your response is not what the IRS wants (remember that we speak their language) it could end up costing you time and money.  Although these IRS notices can seem daunting, don’t fear, we’ve got your back.
