For years the IRS has required tax preparers to complete a significant “due diligence” worksheet for clients claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit.  Now the IRS is requiring additional due diligence requirements, although not as extensive, for claiming certain other refundable credits.  The Additional Child Tax Credit and the education American Opportunity Credit now require tax preparers to ask more questions and attain additional information in order to claim these credits on 2016, and future, tax returns.  As things get more complex you can feel secure that your CPA has knowledge of these requirements and can make sure you get every dollar you are due in your refund.  Give the office a call if you have questions about these credits and what additional documents you may need to provide.

As always, if you think this information would be helpful to any of your friends or family, please feel free to share this link.
