It used to be that a family naturalized into the United States had the ability to claim certain credits retroactively, after finalizing the sometimes time-consuming task of attaining Social Security Numbers for qualifying family members.  This allowed taxpayers to go back and claim available Earned Income Credits, Child Tax Credits, and American Opportunity Tax Credits (formerly Hope Credit) which require a valid SSN.  The PATH Act of 2015 has ended the availability of this option for taxpayers.  Let me know if you have questions as to whether this provision is relevant in your situation or not.
